Yui and Grace (An original short story)

The following, is a short story based on a dream I had a few years ago, about a mother selling a young daughter inadvertently into sex trafficking. This is a work of fiction, but I think this dream also personifies what happens, everyday, across the world.

—-

Yui really thought she was doing the right thing. She was a widow/single mother, living in suburban New York, with a son (John, age 19) and a daughter (Grace, age 14). John, she knew would be fine, because he was older and a boy. John would come home late regularly, after obviously drinking; Yui would scold him briefly (like a good mother should), but never got her feathers really ruffled over it. Boys will be boys, she thought. Even though John dropped out of college only after the first semester, she assumed that he was just going through another phase.

The daughter, on the other hand, worried her tremendously; the world is a dangerous place for a girl. It would be best – it is the mother’s ultimate duty after all – for the girl to properly marry as soon as possible. Ideally, Yui wanted to wait until Grace was at least finished high school, but she couldn’t have predicted her husband dying so prematurely (when Grace was 12). Yui was struggling financially, and desperately wanted to protect Grace’s future. Finding the ideal husband for Grace would be challenging – Grace was an average student, not that pretty, played violin just okay, and spent too much time volunteering at church instead of exercising the fat off her stomach (i.e., all in Yui’s opinion). Plus, her eyes looked too Japanese, and she refused to have eyelid surgery. Yui realized she would have to resign to finding Grace a slightly-less-ideal-husband.

Not too soon thereafter, as luck would have it, Yui’s friend arranged a meeting for Yui, Grace, and a potential suitor named Bob Tai. Yui’s friend promised that he was a well-off man, of great respect and report, and was an elder at their church. Bob was in his late thirties, a lawyer, and had a rice belly. He was a bit older than what Yui would have liked, but beggars can’t be choosers, she thought.

At the meeting, Bob sang the praises of Yui, for making such a beautiful daughter. Bob promised to take care of Grace, send her to college (when it came time), and treat her like a daughter until she turned 18. Yui agreed to the marriage. She sent Grace off with Bob. Grace had barely said a word beyond “hello” and her fate was sealed. She was appalled – that in the 21st century her mother arranged her marriage to this ugly old man.

Immediately, Grace was transported to a motel, and Bob locked her in the room. The room had an eerily clinical appearance (like a hospital room), with glass sliding doors, blue curtains, and a gurney bed. On the shelves above TV, were stuffed animals strewn about. Grace laid there, on the bed, terrified and wondering what would happen to her next. Through the curtains, she could see the shadows of Bob, and another man, talking, and exchange money. That’s when Grace knew she was done for. She had be sold into slavery.

Yui really thought she was doing the right thing.

"Zero-Tolerance" on Trafficking Must Mean What It Says

U.S. officials have acknowledged that human trafficking is a problem of “crisis proportions,” both outside and inside America’s borders. Yet despite professed intent to end this scourge, including with the help of a “zero-tolerance, one strike approach,” human trafficking remains a pervasive and ongoing problem in this nation. As part of ongoing efforts to combat the phenomenon, the ACLU and a coalition of anti-trafficking organizations submitted a written statement last week to the Federal Acquisition Regulatory (FAR) Council, urging the U.S. government to translate its words into actions.

The statement was submitted on the heels of a hearing entitled “Measures on Human Trafficking in the United States” before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. In his testimony, the ACLU’s Steven Watt commended recent efforts by the U.S. government to close loopholes that enable human trafficking on federal government contracts, such as an executive order on human trafficking and a provision in the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, which codifies many of these essential protections. Still, Watt cautioned:

GIVE: Job training program for survivors of trafficking in Bangladesh

I have personally seen the value and effectiveness of this project’s work. Please consider giving, and/or lifting a prayer for these women.

Today, on International Women’s Day, we lift our voices in thanks for the courageous women around the world who work, sometimes against great odds, to improve their livelihood and communities, support their families and open doors to a brighter future. Thank you for supporting MCC’s work to empower women around the world.

In Bangladesh, an MCC program is offering a new start for girls and women who have been forced into sex work. Your gift of empowerment gives women in Bangladesh the capacity to start over, learn vocational skills and find new sources of income

$25 literacy materials - Provide one woman with a literacy curriculum and materials for a year.
$288 training program - Sponsor one woman to go through an eight-month, life-changing program.

I’m With Lincoln

Lincoln is a hero because he moved Congress to act on slavery. There are more slaves today than at any other time in history. Will history repeat itself? http://ImWithLincoln.com
